The Elegance Of The Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery

By turns deeply moving and quietly hilarious, this delightfully, philosophically Parisian novel became a French publishing phenomenon.

Renée, who hides her intelligence well, is an unusually well-read concierge of a grand Parisian apartment building, home to an eclectic mixture of wealthy clients. One of these is the young Paloma Josse, who is determined to end her life to avoid the pampered, emotionally empty future laid out for her by her parents. All is changed however when a new tenant moves in and elegantly turns their lives upside down. Set entirely within the apartments, each of the characters offers a little insight into the human soul. A marvellous read.
